Bungee jumping took the world by storm in the early 1980s. In the United States, you can pinpoint the exact moment: March 6, 1980. That’s when the television show That’s Incredible! broadcasted the first bungee jump in the United States. The jump was from Colorado’s Royal Gorge Bridge, which happens to be the world’s second-tallest suspension bridge, at a heart-stopping 1,053 feet above the canyon floor.

Television audiences were thrilled.

AJ Hackett was not involved with the sport’s debut on That’s Incredible! but he was a first-class entrepreneur. He recognized bungee jumping for its potential to become a mainstream adrenaline sport. He began to aggressively market the sport by setting a few bungee records himself (he earned a 1987 World Record for a jump off the Eiffel Tower) and opening the world’s first commercial bungee jump operation near Queenstown, in his native New Zealand.

Fast-forward to 2001, when Hackett opened the world’s highest commercial bungee jump, a terrifying 764-foot drop from Macau Tower in China. It’s five seconds of adrenaline-fueled, stomach-churning freefall at speeds up to 125 miles per hour. It remains the tallest commercial bungee jump in the world, even today.
